You both may be interested in Green Buildings. They combine many disciplines such as solar, recycling, and gardening. They have tours and conferences in your area.
Friends of the Earth are a good organisation.
So are Permaculture.

Contact your local building department, I’m sure they would have a list of contractors in your area that specialize in those areas.
Make sure to recruit some heavies so you can beat up people who don’t agree with you.
